Final Term 1 Assembly

We had our final school assembly for term 1.  Our junior school sang a lovely kiwi song about colour called Colours of Aotearoa.  The middle team performed Old MacDonald on their recorders and the senior team performed with their ukuleles and voices.  It was a fabulous way to celebrate our musical abilities thanks to the great teaching of Mrs Caldwell. It was also a beautiful way to celebrate Mr Newton's final assembly before he heads away on his sabbatical for term 2.

Weird & Whacky Animals

I was looking on room 5 of Mornington School's blog (my daughter's class) and saw this awesome blog about animals that are lacking in colour.  They have a special name - called 'albino'.  I thought room 9 children might like to find out some more about this and perhaps post what they find out.  It might also makes us think of some other questions we might want to find out about. Why Autumn Leaves Change Colour - By Zane

1.   At summer time the leaves are busy making food
2.  Chlorophyll makes the leaves green colour
3.  When the tree stops making food it changes colour
4.  When the chlorophyll disappers, yellow and orange shows
5.  When they combine it makes red
6.  No sun - no chlorophyll

Why Do Autumn Leaves Change Colour - By Bee

  • The sun helps to make food for the leaves
  • Chlorophyll makes the leaves green
  • When the sun goes away the leaves start to change colour because the chlorophyll has disappeared.

Inquiry Learning: Why Autumn Leaves Change Colour

As part of our inquiry learning topic Colour My World, our class wondered why the leaves change colour during autumn.  We looked at some You tube clips and articles off the internet to find out.  We then sorted out what we had learnt by writing an explanation and drawing a labelled diagram.  Here are some of the things we learnt:

  • In summer the leaves on the tree are green because they are busy making food
  • Chlorophyll makes the leaves stay green
  • When the sun is gone the chlorophyll goes away then the leaves go back to orange and yellow

The School Fair - by Mackenzie

Makenzie has been working hard at stretching out all the sounds she can hear  in a word  so that her spelling gets better.  She has also been working on using adjectives and verbs.  Can you spot any of these?  If so, perhaps you could give her some feedback.

Hi.  I'm at the school fair having fun.  I went on the wriggly worm with my brother Daniel.  I had so much fun because the air kept blowing me over.  I couldn't stand up properly.  I kept on falling over onto my tummy in the wriggly worm.  It felt like I was in a real worm because it had a tongue and sharp teeth.  It was a fabulous day at the St Clair School fair.  Finally I had my last go on the wiggly worm.  I got out.  l sped to room 7 faster than Superman.
